Liquid Level Indicaters are anything but helpful! They're designed really badly so you can't tell when you've put enough milk in the bottom of your mug or cup when you make a hot drink, when you fill the cup up, the thing won't stop bleeping or whistling at you till youdry it off with a piece of kitchen roll or a towel, and some do it well before the liquid gets to the top of your cup so you might end up with half a cup of coffee or tea. No no no, I'd rather let my left index finger tell me when the cup's full than one of those stupid things! Sheelob thinks the same. She got well pissed off with hers when i was round her house one time.

I have one but only use it when having company over, and the reason is because I don't think my company wants my jerms inside their drink, but i guess on the other hand, if they didn't know i used my finger and I didn't tell them they'd be fine with it.

this cat is sooo lazy - I just fill a cup or mug with cold water to the level I want and zap it in the microwave... then add instant coffee, etc, etc. LOL

i have one, and I always use it, when I'm pouring boiling water into my cup. i hate burning my finger. however, I agree that they're badly designed, at least the one, I have, which is the only model available in denmark, is. I don't know how to design them better, though, as there both needs to be a battery and some electronic something to make it beep.

Post 6 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Monday, 20-Feb-2006 13:20:22

okay okay.

yes. they are badly designed and when i say badly i think they should make it a bit easier to insert the indicator in the cup.

GRRR hooking those things are never easy!

Post 7 by sparkie (the hilljack) on Monday, 20-Feb-2006 19:28:50

The thing I worry about with them is that the battery hangs out the end and does not have a cover of any kind, so if you accidently get the battery wet it may give you an electric shock.

i've got this small one. i get anoyed with them, but have to use it as my fingers burn so easily, i think i have very sensitive skin around my fingers. they're badly designed and bleep a lot. i have to use a paper towel whenever i drag it out of the cup, and sometimes once you've hooked it in, it slips about in the cup, so you have to steady it with your finger.

Post 9 by bozmagic (The rottie's your best friend if you want him/her to be, lol.) on Wednesday, 22-Feb-2006 10:00:58

That's perhaps why the skin on the tip of my left index finger's permanently hard. iI can't feel it when i'm doing something like typing this message, but that's all the better for me if i don't want to use one of those stupid levellers.

troy. that is a bad excuse

Post 11 by cuddle_kitten84 (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 24-Feb-2006 7:51:52

lol. i use it for safety more than anything, as i get absolutely killed if any liquid whatsoever goes over the side.

Hell no! I used it for a week, and didn't use it anymore. It's that bad.

I have 1, but rarely ever use it, mainly because I have it put up and am too lazy to look for it. If I ever get my own place though, I might use it more, well at least when I have company over.

Post 14 by Feathered Serpent (I can't call it a day til I enter the zone BBS) on Tuesday, 13-Oct-2009 22:42:35

I tell more by sound. After that I use my finger. I have one But I don't know where it is. I only used it once and that was when I had to pour a drink for my family they don;t like fingers being in there drink.

hmmm, I'm not sure why your all having such issues with using your level indicators? ours works just fine. no issues hanging it, or stopping it when you take it out of the cup. it don't continue dinging when you pull it out. yeah, when you rinse it it does. I quite like it, better than burning fingers! your not going to get zapped if the battery gets wet!

Post 16 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 13-Oct-2009 23:46:10

I personally can't stand them. I had one for a while but I could never get it to stop bleeping out London Bridge. A simple beep would have been preferable. But I've become rather good at telling when hot water is relatively close to the brim of the cup when I make hot cocoa so I rarely burn my fingers.

Post 17 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Tuesday, 13-Oct-2009 23:59:10

I had one, hated it. The thing was so piercingly loud, and when your the first one up, getting a cup of coffee, not something you want to hear.

Post 18 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 0:30:10

I don't stick my finger in there and let it sizzle. I stick my finger in there periodically for a quick second or two, but I rather have a chance of my finger being scorched, which has never happened, than use that thing.

I have to agree with shay. I've never had a problem with them. well, I take that back, when I used one that played a tune, the drawer I had it in was right next to the dishwasher and it would play when the drawer filled up with steam.
I'm not sure how you can have trouble hooking it onto the side of the glass. the one I have has two long prongs in a hook, and its incredibly easy to hook onto the side of the glass. but, for most of the problems you've listed, I can give some tips to fix them:
1. if you don't like hearing a bleeping and blaringly loud tune in the morning, (and really, who does), get one that vibrates, its nearly silent.
2. Like shay said, your not going to get shocked if the battery gets wet, but they do make ones where the batery is contained in a waterproof compartment that does not go in the cup or near the drink your pouring. I have one like that, and I've never had a problem.
3. When pouring milk into the bottom of the mug, you can usually use sound to determine how much you have. After all, unless your filling the mug with milk, you're probably not going to use very much with a hot drink, because its makes a hot drink into a luke warm drink; and who wants a luke warm drink.
4. They do make a model with an extendable sensor, so you can set it at the level you want, then pour your drink. If you only want half a cup of something.

Now, I do have complains about them. for one, they don't work on certain kinds of glasses, martini glasses for one, but that is easily fixable by knowing how much liquid a martini is made with and adding the ice, (if you use ice), after you pour the liquid into the glass. Also, es presso cups are too small for you to use a LLI on, the prougs would touch the bottom of the cup. Last, they can throw your glass off balance. I've had some spills with glasses that were slightly top heavy, and the indicator made them topple when I wasn't expecting it.
Those are the only complaints I have with them, and I don't think any piece of technology is perfect, so they aren't that bad in my opinion. I'd rather use one, with the downsides included, then stick my finger in boiling water. I've done that before, and ended up with very bad burns and blisters. I need my fingertips to be sensative so I can read braille, I can't afford to burn them that much.
Hope this helps some of you.

I! Hate! Liquid! Level! Indicators! I used one of those stupid beeping ones when I was younger, but hated the sound of it, so got rid of it in the end and I used to have a vibrating one, but it just started being stupid and vibrating when the liquid wasn't even near the top of the cup or the glass, so gave up on that idea. No, I agree with Jen, I'd rather use my finger if I'm just making a drink for myself.

we don't have a single issue with ours, the only thing I have a problem with is the obnoxious buzz, but it really doesn't bother me any more. it has never gon off before it should have and it's never kept on buzzing when we removed it from the cup. usually i just use my finger, but for hot things like coffy, or for someone elces drink like my husband's, or company, I use the indicater, the prongs seem long enough to me, maybey there's several different moddles?

Post 22 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 14:59:39

I haven't seen any others. My first one kept making a stupid noise after I took it out of the cup as well, which was very annoying.

Post 23 by cumbiambera2005 (i just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 16:20:32

I have one but hardly use it, though I do agree they are helpful. I usually just use the edge of my finger and I don't normally pour drinks for other people as much so that's really not a problem. Although sometimes, if and when I do pour for others, they're usually people i'm close to and could probably care less. After all, I try to keep my hands clean and I don't stick my entire finger in there anyway. But yeah, they're nice, when i use them.
Oh, and I agree about the coffee thing, I just use cold water and stick it in the microwave so that I don't make a mess. It scares me trying to pour from that coffee thing! And actually my grandma does the same thing so it's kind of something we all do just to make it easier and less messy.

What the hell do y'all do to burn your finger, I never have. I've burnt my face by being a bit careless but never my finger.

Post 25 by The Bad Influence (kicking ass and dying trying) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 22:10:55

well, I don't know about any one elce, but for me the issue stands with not knowing if i burn my fingers. I have diabetes and my finger tips are numb, so i could doo dammage if i leave it in there too long with out knowing it's burning me. and for cool drinks i just stick my finger deaper in the cup so when the liquid does get to the part of my finger that I can feel i'll know when to stop.

Post 26 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 22:52:12

you said What the hell do y'all do to burn your finger, I never have. I've burnt my face by being a bit careless but never my finger., um, duh. this should be obvious. hehehe When you poor a hot drink and put your finger in it just like you do a cold drink. The hot drink is hot and so it burns your finger! hmmm, thought that was obvious. but maybe not! hehehe

Post 27 by Harp (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 15-Oct-2009 11:30:40

Perhaps I just have a very scued view on things but, I'm having trouble seeing how you could burn your face ahead of burning your finger. *Shrugs* What did you do exactly, accidentally dip your nose into your cup?

It does seem rather obvious to me how one could burn a finger. But not a face...

Dan.

Post 28 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Thursday, 15-Oct-2009 23:38:58

yeah, i was thinking the same thing. it's not like you put your face in the cup to see if it's hot. heheehI have a hard time understanding your reason for the question. hehehe

Post 29 by UnknownQuantity (Account disabled) on Thursday, 15-Oct-2009 23:52:32

I used to use one of these, but have found my finger is easier now, too! It as useful, but it would often let me fill the cup either not far enough, or too far, so it would spill if you carried it somewhere.

Post 30 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 16-Oct-2009 16:32:15

agree with shea. I've never had a problem with mine at all. The only question is; what kind of battery do you have to use when the one that came in the device stops working? i've lost the dirrections for mine, unfortunately, so i'm not sure what kind of battery to buy.
